Clinical Experience

General Practice Experience

As a General Dentist, I am responsible for diagnosis, treatment and overall coordination of services to meet the oral health needs of a diverse population of patients in a general practice setting. My clinical experience include the following:

  • Comprehensive/Limited Examinations; Emergency Dental Care
  • Endodontics: Routinely provide anterior and premolar non-surgical endodontic therapy.  Limited experience working with molars.  Utilize the WaveOne Gold systems.
  • Operative and Restorative Dentistry
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: Routine and surgical extractions, bone grafting, alveoplasty, etc.  Limited experience with wisdom teeth extractions.
  • Orthodontics: Utilize Invisalign systems
  • Pediatric Dentistry: Routine care of pediatric population of patients
  • Periodontics
  • Fixed Prosthodontics
  • Removable Prosthodontics

 

Graduation Requirements

The following are minimum requirements set forth by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry to earn a DDS degree.

UNC Requirements

  • 2 case follow-ups (6 months post root canal treatment)
  • Successful completion of 1 Endodontic Emergency Rotation
  • 9 Total Canal Credits

Clinical Experience Completed

  • 2 case follow-ups
  • Successful completion of 6 Endodontic Emergency Rotations
  • 9 Total Canals Obturated (2 anterior teeth, 2 premolars, 1 mandibular Molar)

UNC Requirements

  • 35 operative points by end of 2nd year
  • 175 operative points by end of 3rd year
  • Successful completion of a Class II amalgam competency
  • Successful completion of a Class III Composite competency

Both the complexity (weight) of the procedure and the performance of the student (grade) determines point designations. Weights are based on the number of surfaces involved for a given restoration.

Example:

  • MOD amalgam receives a grade of B
  • MOD (3 surfaces) has a weight of 3
  • A “B” has a value of 3
  • Points for the procedure: 3 x 3 = 9

Clinical Experience Completed

  • 45 operative points by end of 2nd year
  • 266 operative points by end of 3rd year
  • Successful completion of a Class II amalgam competency
  • Successful completion of a Class III Composite competency

Operative procedures completed outside of student clinics (i.e. on rotation) are not counted towards total operative points.

 

UNC Requirements

  • 50 dentoalveolar procedures  (extractions, implants, biopsies, alveoplasty, etc.)

Clinical Experience Completed

  • 92 extractions

UNC Requirements

  • Assist with two biopsy procedures.
  • Perform corresponding biopsy interpretations by reviewing slides independently and explaining microscopic findings with OMFP proctor.

  • Performed corresponding biopsy interpretations by end of 2nd year summer
  • Completed an elective, semester long, pathology rotation

  • Complete one simple movement case (minimum 1 tooth, movement of 1 mm)

    • Minimum of 3 to 4 patients treated to completion and discharged in Total Patient Care Program
    • Minimum of 3 to 4 pediatric approved intra or extramural rotations.
    • PARE:  at least one pedo advanced restorative experience

  • 5 treated periodontitis cases (3 comprehensive and 2 limited cases)
  • 4 periodontal reevaluations
  • 15 quadrants of scaling and root planing
  • 6 surgical assists (at least 2 must be for implant placement)

    • minimum of 3 cast base RPD

“Unit” defined as: 1 unit = cast base RPD, complete denture, flexible resin base denture, interim partial.  1/2 Units are awarded for relines, retrofit of implant retained denture, interim/acrylic partials, acrylic partials.

  • Treated a total of 5 patients with conditions ranging from cerebral palsy, autism, and down syndrome

Prenatal / Infant Oral Health Rotation Experience:
